What is the purpose and background of this study?

The goal of this study is to explore gambling behavior and factors associated with gambling behaviors. This research will inform program and policy development in Manitoba.

The project sponsors recognize the need to learn more about risk and resiliency factors that relate to gambling. Previous research shows that young adults are most at-risk of developing problems with their gambling, which is why this study is focusing on 18 to 20 year olds in Manitoba
.

What are my rights and responsibilities?

Participation in this study is voluntary. You have the right to refuse to answer questions at any time during the study, and you can withdraw from the study at any time. If you decide to withdraw from the study, you have the right to ask that all previous collected data be destroyed. At any time during the study, you have to right to contact the project coordinators if you have any questions or concerns.

Once you have agreed to be part of the study, your responsibilities include completing the consent form, completing the surveys (by telephone and either online or through the mail), and informing the researchers if your contact information changes during the course of the study. You will also be asked to provide names and contact information for people in your life who are likely to know where you will be over the five year period; this will be helpful if your contact information changes and you forget to let us know. These contacts will be informed about your involvement in this study and that we wish to locate you. In order to protect your privacy, we will not share any other information with these contacts.

Can I see any reports relating to this project?

You can contact the project coordinators at any time during the study to discuss your answers and/or to ask about any reports. You have the right to see the final project report which will be made public. Periodically, brief project updates will also be made available. If this is something that you would like to receive, a team member will send you a copy at your request.

What are the benefits and risks of participating in this study?

If you agree to participate in this study, you may personally feel some benefit from being involved in an important research project. Indirectly, you will be providing information that will inform program and policy development in Manitoba.

Both the telephone, online, and paper-based surveys will ask some personal questions that could be upsetting and cause some distress. Our telephone interviewers are highly trained and are aware that some of the questions may cause discomfort. They can provide you with contact information for support services if you are upset or distressed. You will be provided with a list of resources and support services in case you feel upset or distressed when you are alone, filling in the online or paper-based survey. Please call these numbers if you feel you need help.

Will I be compensated?

Yes! After each completed cycle, we will send you a gift certificate to compensate you for your time. For each cycle you complete, you will receive a $35 gift certificate to your choice of Futureshop, Shell, or Sears. In addition, you will be given a $5 incentive if you let us know if your contact information changes or if you refer someone else to the study who completes the survey.

If you decide to withdraw from the study, you will always be paid for the last survey that was completed. For example, if you complete the first and second surveys but decide to withdraw before the third one, you will still receive the gift certificates for the first and second surveys. We appreciate your involvement in this project and will always compensate your time, even if you decide to withdraw before the project is finished.

Will my personal information be kept confidential?

Absolutely! All your information will be kept confidential. All researchers involved are bound by the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). FIPPA provides Manitobans and others with a right of access to records of public bodies, subject to certain specified exceptions, and with protection for personal information held by public bodies.

In addition to FIPPA, each of the project sponsors has policies on confidentiality. Also, PRA Inc., the research firm that has been hired to collect this data, adheres to the “PRA Inc. Privacy Policy: Compliance with Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.” Most importantly, at the end of each survey cycle, personal identifiers, including names and addresses, are removed from the database. All results will be reported on an aggregate basis, which means that no individuals will ever be identified in project reports.

If you have questions about your privacy or wish to view any of the documents stated above, please contact the project coordinators.
